SEPANG – The ongoing Baggage Handling System (BHS) replacement programme at KL International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 has entered its next phase with enhancement works of its baggage reclaim carousels serving international arriving passengers.
Hoarding installation works commenced yesterday to facilitate the replacement of the baggage reclaim carousel belt at Carousel E. Similar hoarding works for Carousel F are scheduled to begin on 31 August 2026. . Both phases of works are scheduled for completion by January 2027, after which the BHS replacement programme will continue in subsequent phases at other baggage reclaim carousels. The phased approach enables the modernisation works to be carried out safely and systematically within a live airport environment while minimising interruptions to baggage operations.
According to Malaysia Airports Managing Director, Dato' Mohd Izani Ghani, “The BHS replacement programme is being delivered in carefully planned phases to ensure KLIA remains fully operational while we modernise critical airport infrastructure. Each completed phase strengthens the system's reliability, resilience and capacity, enabling us to better serve passengers and airline partners well into the future."
"Working closely with our airline and ground handling partners, we have put the necessary measures in place to minimise disruption throughout each phase of enhancement works. While passengers may experience some temporary congestion within the baggage reclaim hall, baggage delivery operations will continue as normal."
To ensure a seamless passenger experience, four temporary baggage collection areas will be activated when required to manage baggage volumes and prevent overflowing on the carousels. Clear signage will identify the respective flights, while baggage operations, ground handling and customer experience teams will be on hand to assist passengers in locating and collecting their baggage.
Safety remains the highest priority throughout each phase of the programme. All hoarding installation and construction activities will be carried out in full compliance with operational requirements to safeguard passengers, airport personnel and daily operations.
Malaysia Airports appreciates the patience and understanding of passengers as these essential improvements are carried out to strengthen KLIA's long-term operational capabilities and service excellence.
